Rochester Quadrajet Carburetor Removal
Always plan to have the car "out of service" for the day in case something goes wrong. And buy any manuals or tools beforehand. You will need a couple cans of carburetor cleaner and gallon of kerosene or diesel fuel for cleaning.
If you have a digital camera, now would be a nice time to mark and take pictures of the carburetor and it's various connections. (e.g.: vacuum lines, accelerator cables etc.) If you don't have a digital camera, draw a picture and use tape to number/mark your hoses.
Once you are sure that you will know where to put the vacuum hoses and linkages back on the carburetor you can start to remove all vacuum lines, accelerator cable, kick down cable and fuel line.
A not about the fuel line. I would suggest using a flare nut wrench to remove the fuel line and a one inch wrench to remove the fuel filter. This is the trickiest part of your rebuild! These nuts can be on pretty tight and the risk of rounded them off can be eliminated by using the right tools.
Once the fuel line is removed you can go ahead and remove the 4 bolts that hold the carburetor to the intake manifold. The carburetor may need a little "persuasion" to come off.
After you have removed the carb, it is a great idea to cover the intake manifold opening with a rag or some object to avoid the dropping something in there.
Ok now you have your carburetor off and there is gas spilling everywhere. Take your carburetor to a nice clean dry place for cleaning, disassembly and inspection. WARNING!! Always wear eye protection. I learned the hard way. Find a container that will hold your carburetor and cleaner.
The container should allow for the carburetor to be completely submerged. Place the carburetor into the container and fill with kerosene or diesel fuel. Many people including myself leave the carburetor in the cleaner overnight, but is totally not necessary.
Let the carburetor sit submerged in the cleaner for about an hour making sure to agitate the cleaner once and awhile. Take lunch!
